Mario enters the football field at last, and does it rather differently to what we expected... |
The wait has been worth it. Nintendo has seen the light and produced a Mario Football game. Mario Smash Football lives up to its rather bruising name in more ways than one and it doesn't feel like football at some points.
As this is a Mario sports game, there isn't really any plot. As with the other games, the plot is simple and just involves getting the characters into the sports theme. This time, Mario and co have to win the Super Bowser Cup. That's basically it. Unfortunately, Mario Smash Football isn't made by the people who made the previous sports titles. This is clear to see. It is actually made by the people who make the NHL games for Gamecube. This is very obvious to see as the game feels like Ice Hockey. More on that later though. The most obvious loss from this change in creator is the title sequence. Gone are the hilarious sequences featuring Wario and Waluigi, replaced by a rather boring intro of Mario and Co in a variety of different football matches. It's basically an overview of the game.
Once you get into the game, it's hilarious. The obviousness of the hockey creators is clear to see now. Instead of massive green pitches, there are bleak, futuristic arenas filled with concrete, which looks more hockey than football. The arenas are fenced in with an electric fence, which is hockey-esque. Although this proves VERY funny when you fuse Donkey Kong or any of the other characters to this fence and hear there hilarious screams, this isn't what Mario games are all about. The next hockey like thing is the violence. Yes you read correctly, violence in a Mario game. Apart from the usual sliding tackles, there is another violent part of the game. The electric fence is one, smacking the ball into people from point blank range is another, but the most surprising one is a button known as BIG HIT. This is basically an assault move. This HEAD BUTTS the character who has the ball. Yet again, this is hilarious, but isn't Mario. There is also a severe lack of characters with only 8 characters to choose from as captains.
