Countless things, but the main things that need to happen:
- Proper voice chat... with headsets and games that support it
- Scrap friend codes, and if Nintendo really feels their that important, have just ONE for all games
- Have some kind of central place, where you can see if your friends are online, no matter what they're doing
Just generally it needs to match the likes of Xbox and PS3, and at the moment its miles behind... And I get a bad feeling its not going to improve while Nintendo keep saying they're not competing directly with Xbox and PS3, and with sales figures like the Wii and DS have... well who can argue...
